The 30-year-old man suspected of a terrorist rampage that injured a police officer and four other people in Edmonton, Alberta, on Saturday night is a Somali national pursuing refugee status who had previously been investigated for "espousing extremist ideology," authorities said Sunday.

The suspect, whose name wasn't released, was arrested after the attack on suspicion of attempted murder and various terrorism charges, police said.

The suspect, whose name wasn't released, was arrested after the attack on suspicion of attempted murder and various terrorism charges, police said.

Five Hurt in Suspected Terrorist Attacks in Edmonton

The previous investigation, which occurred in 2015, concluded without enough evidence to pursue criminal charges, said Marlin Degrand, assistant commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

"At that time, he did not show signs warranting keeping him any further," Degrand said, adding that until Saturday, he "hadn't done anything negative towards the police."

Degrand said the suspect was in the refugee claimant process, although he didn't provide additional details.

The injured officer was released from the hospital Sunday and was expected to make a full recovery, despite having been stabbed several times, Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht said.

"He was in a struggle for his life, holding on to his gun with one hand and blocking the knife in the other," Knecht said.

Two of the other victims have been released from a hospital, Knecht said, and a third was listed as stable. The fourth victim suffered a fractured skull and was being held for observation, he said.

READ: Trudeau Releases Statement On Edmonton Terror Attack, Says “Canada’s Strength Comes From Our Diversity”

Justin Trudeau has released a statement on the Edmonton terror attack. The statement can be read below:

“The Government of Canada and Canadians stand with the people of Edmonton after the terrorist attack on Saturday that sent an Edmonton Police Service officer to hospital and injured a number of innocent people who were out to cheer on their football team and to enjoy an evening in their city. I am deeply concerned and outraged by this tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with those injured, their family and friends, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence. I am also grateful for the first responders who were there on the scene, and the enforcement authorities who have been working through the night to make sure that everybody in Edmonton and Alberta is safe and secure. Police officers put themselves at great personal risk every single day on our behalf, and this attack is a stark reminder of the sacrifices they make for the public good.

“While the investigation continues, early reports indicate that this is another example of the hate that we must remain ever vigilant against. The RCMP and the Edmonton Police Service, through the Integrated National Enforcement Team, are working closely together to bring those involved to justice.

“We cannot – and will not – let violent extremism take root in our communities. We know that Canada’s strength comes from our diversity, and we will not be cowed by those who seek to divide us or promote fear. Edmonton is a strong and resilient city, and I am confident that its citizens will support one another to overcome this tragic event.”

Of note, while Trudeau repeats his usual “diversity is strength” talking point, his statement leaves out the fact that an Islamic State flag was found at the scene – something reported by almost every news outlet throughout Canada and across the world.
