An Open Letter to Prime Minister Trudeau and Finance Minister Morneau

Dear Sirs; A great many voting citizens elected your government on the basis that a modest amount of deficit spending would finance renewed infrastructure and transportation projects and to assist Canadians to reinvent our economy from resourced based industries to a new economy.

You have been in power for just about two years and although you campaigned on a promise of modest deficit spending of around $10 billion/year, the media is broadcasting numbers up to three times higher than your promises of 2015. On top of that, I do not see anything in any of your government's undertakings to show for the huge spending under your leadership.

Canadians work very hard to earn enough money to feed their families, keep roofs over their heads and pay their taxes. Most of us do not spend three times our budgeted amounts or bankruptcies would be far more prevalent. On average, Canadians are a prudent lot who make great efforts to save and re-invest. We work hard to squirrel amounts away for that family vacation, that new car and for our children's university education. As such I am disgusted by the half-baked way your government is doling out money to all kinds of aid projects outside the country, paying millions to known terrorists and in general using our future financial resources in ways that will yield no long term benefit to Canadians; on the contrary, your ill considered approach to other people's money is not only insulting but is beyond any mandate you ever received from Canadian voters. Our leaders should have better vision and be better at budgeting than their citizens! But sadly, this is not the case.

Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Morneau, Canadians have worked hard for their incomes. And some Canadians in Western Provinces have been displaced by fires and their jobs by the fall of resource commodity prices. They need the money that they paid in taxes to now help them and not fund lofty, feel good projects abroad.

We did not work hard for our money so that your government could treat our savings whether corporate or otherwise as your political party's private trust funds to be used to garner future votes from fast-tracked and loosely planned immigration schemes. You made promises to be transparent, to hear Canadians, to consult and to govern differently than your predecessor. I'm sorry to say sirs, that you are not governing at all. You are simply spending and Canadians will remember this when their increased taxes in the next two years eliminates their own discretionary spending and savings to do the things they want to do.

You have two years to reverse course, reign in the indiscriminate spending and put the capital to work rebuilding our country's infrastructure and stimulating investments in businesses to create opportunities for Canadians. It takes real leadership to change course. Be those leaders or step aside.

Sincerely yours Arnold Shuchat Richmond, BC
